  • Assessment and Review for Peat Mine Licence Appeals - for Whelan Enns Associates
    Fall 2012
    This project includes technical support for First Nation community consultations regarding two peat mine appeals. Presentation material for community meetings, review of environmental statements, and licensing filings, including standards for peat mines, technical advisory comments among the products for this project. A final report for the Crown incorporating traditional knowledge, issues and rights concerns from the First Nation, and technical and scientific assessment of the proposed licences, was provided to the First Nation.
  • Bipole III Community Presentation - for Manitoba Wildlands
    Fall 2012
    Bipole III community presentation regarding the Manitoba Hydro project, its corridor, potential environmental impacts and possible impacts on Aboriginal rights and traditional lands and waters. The presentation is customized for each community audience, and their treaty, occupancy and traditional use areas. This approach was essential as 26 First Nations, and 46 Aboriginal communities have been identified as affected by Bipole III, according to Manitoba Hydro.
  • Bipole III Maps - for Manitoba Wildlands

    Bipole III map products to show the Manitoba Hydro Bipole III preferred corridor in relation to First Nation traditional territories and treaty regions in Manitoba. Maps customized for specific community to show treaty land entitlement land selections, pending land acquisitions, crown land designations, and new First Nation land acquisitions. . Both converter stations to service the new direct current transmission system included in map products.
  • Peat Mining Products - for Manitoba Wildlands

    Peat mining information products for First Nation community consultation project regarding appeal of environmental licences for peat mines. Products include technical presentation for community meetings, summaries of discussion from each community event, review of company EIS materials concerning the request for license, and various reports for community and government audiences. Research included review of the public registry contents, correspondence, technical advisory committee comments, and industry materials. Final report to Manitoba government provided First Nation response to the Crown regarding these licences.
  • Bipole III Community Surveys - for Manitoba Wildlands

    This survey was circulated in community open houses, presentations, and round table discussions regarding the project. Questions pertain to traditional land use, possible impacts from Bipole III and the converter stations, specific sites that may be impacted, and the geographic scope of First Nation risks to rights and access to lands from the project. Activity includes reporting on the outcome of the survey, with statistical analysis.
  • Bipole III Woodland Caribou Reports Analysis - for Manitoba Wildlands

    Review of Manitoba Hydro Bipole III woodland caribou technical materials Summary regarding woodland caribou contents in all EIS products, including analysis of gaps or deficiencies in these woodland caribou materials. Search performed throughout EIS for confirming or contradicting entries.

  • Bipole III Expanded Outline - Environment Impact Statements (EIS) - for Manitoba Wildlands

    Contents in each section of the Bipole III EIS were noted and expanded within the table of contents or outline structure. Specific annotated outlines for primary technical reports filed with the EIS and during proceedings were also provided. The expanded outline for the EIS was posted publicly and used during research, to assist in writing information requests to Manitoba Hydro, and to assist all parties to locate contents in the sizeable amount of material filed by Manitoba Hydro.

Each plan contains a clear statements of rights flowing from Canada's constitution and Charter of Rights, and Treaty.

    Manitoba Wildlands provided comments on Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA) Background Document on the Keeyask Generation Station. Comments follow the same headers used in the Background Document and focus on requirements under Canadian Environmental Assessment Act to consider decommissioning of a project, the need for and alternatives to the project, and the cumulative effects of the project along with any existing, future, or intended connected projects.
  • Review of NDP Environment Promises Since 1999 (Jan. 2012 Update) - for Manitoba Wildlands

    Chart updated, with promises from Oct 4, 2011 40th Manitoba General Election added. Chart lists all environment promises made by the Manitoba NDP in 1999, 2003, 2007, and 2011 elections. Chart includes total environment promises, how many are done, done partially, or not done as of January 1, 2012. Promises are taken from Manitoba Wildlands letters, surveys, and questionnaire responses and party platforms dating from 1999 to 2011.
